Remember hearing that one of the new features of iPhone OS 3.1 was an anti-phishing capability for Safari? Jim Dalrymple over at The Loop wondered if it was working properly, and asked Apple what was going on. The response?
“Safari’s anti-phishing database is downloaded while the user charges their phone in order to protect battery life and ensure there aren’t any additional data fees,” Apple spokesman, Bill Evans, told The Loop. “After updating to iPhone OS 3.1 the user should launch Safari, connect to a Wi-Fi network and charge their iPhone with the screen off. For most users this process should happen automatically when they charge their phone.”
What this apparently does is allows Safari to completely download the anti-phishing database, which is necessary before the feature will work. It also appears that you’ll need to update the database on occasion in the same way — charge your iPhone with Safari up and the screen off.
As always, TUAW urges you to practice safe computing, so enabling anti-phishing in this odd Apple-approved manner is highly recommended.

There is finally some good news for them as Dev Team seem to have just updated the blog post in which they had warned users to avoid upgrading to iPhone OS 3.1 with this note:
We’re currently working on PwnageTool for 3.1, and will be sure to let you know when it’s available!
iPhone OS 3.1 update consists of two parts: update for iPhone OS and an update for modem firmware (from 04.26.08 in iPhone OS 3.0 to 05.11.07).
PwnageTool will allow users to update only the iPhone OS to 3.1 so that they can enjoy all the new features without updating the modem firmware so that they can use UltraSn0w to unlock their iPhone. PwnageTool will be available only for Mac users
.
We’ll let you know as soon as PwnageTool for iPhone OS 3.1 is available.

According to CNET, Vonage is currently beta testing the Mobile VoIP app and expects to announce availability soon. Reports say that Apple is working with Vonage to settle a few technical issues with the software which made us curious. There have been statements from AT&T in the past that Apple may not actively assist developers in building a VoIP app:
Both parties (AT&T and Apple) required assurances that the revenues from the AT&T voice plans available to iPhone customers would not be reduced by enabling VoIP calling functionality on the iPhone.

AT&T has announced that they have strengthened its 3G mobile broadband network in New York, New Jersey and Long Island, which should improve the connectivity, performance and enhanced in-building wireless coverage.
AT&T has issued the following press statement:
AT&T today announced a substantial strengthening of its 3G mobile broadband wireless network where it has deployed spectrum in the 850 MHz band across large portions of metro New York City, Long Island and New Jersey. As a result, customers in these areas should experience better connectivity, performance and enhanced in-building wireless coverage.
They have gone on to explain the steps taken to improve quality and coverage:
The 850 MHz spectrum was deployed for 3G use at more than 1,600 cell sites in metro New York, Long Island and New Jersey. It is considered a high-quality spectrum, which generally results in better in-building coverage. While specific benefits of the additional 3G spectrum will vary by location, AT&T 3G customers should see improved quality and coverage throughout New York City, Long Island and New Jersey where 850 MHz spectrum has been deployed. AT&T technicians nationwide responsible for monitoring network performance for service quality and coverage have seen significant increases in total 3G data traffic in areas where the 850MHz spectrum has been deployed.
One of the biggest complaints from AT&T’s iPhone users have been poor network coverage. So it’s good to see AT&T taking steps to address the problem.
This exercise is part of the initiative that AT&T had announced back in May. AT&T had announced plans to upgrade its network to HSPA 7.2 3G wireless technology topping out at 7.2 Mbps, double the current speed of 3.6 Mbps to deliver even faster 3G mobile broadband speeds.

AdMob estimate that the iPhone and iPod touch App Store could represent a $2.5 billion a year economy, which based the estimate off usage stats for their mobile ad network, and a survey of 1000 iPhone, iPod touch, and Google Android users. But not so fast, says Cult of Mac along with developers from Polar Bear Farms, App Cubby, and the Yankee Group.
$2.4 billion divided by the 65,000 apps in the App Store is $37,000 per app, per year. And while some developers earn that, many do not.
They figure it’s closer to $250 million to $500 million, or roughly one fifth to one tenth the size.
AdMob is sticking to their original numbers, however, according to the methodology shared again with GigaOm.

One of the problems with Skype is when you make an outgoing call to a landline/cellphone, the caller ID shows up as some random number. When your friends/family see this number they normally reject the call as they think you’re some sort of creepy telemarketer.

Before I even begin this post, I want to make very clear that I know what I am about to talk about is old, old, old, old news. How do I know this? Because it has been around since June 17, 2009 and maybe even earlier.
The reason I am posting this is because thisfeature was JUST made aware to me yesterday and maybe not everyone is aware of it either. It is a feature I should have known about but didn’t. *hangs head in shame*
What I am referring to is the ability to customizethe results of your Spotlight search (swipe toward the right on the first Home Screen on your iPhone) on your iPhone that is running 3.0 firmware or later. In my defense, I rarely use Spotlight and never bothered to even consider settings for it.
Let’s start from the beginning.

There are certain apps on the iPhone that require a WiFi connection to work. Such apps include Skype, SlingPlayer, AOL Radio, YouTube, and the App Store/iTunes (for DL > 10MB). How does one get around this?
Jailbreak your iPhone then installing 3rd party apps, such as VoIPover3G and 3G Unrestrictor (for 3GS users) are the answers. This hack allowed users to use Skype and SlingPlayer over 3G!
Using 3G Unrestrictor is Dead Easy–Just Select Apps and Go
Using 3G Unrestrictor was equally as easy. Launch the app via your homescreen, click Edit, click the “+” signa and you’ll see a list of apps on your iPhone. Just select the ones you want to use over 3G and voila–you’re done! Take a look at my pictures below to see how simple it is to use this app.
